Firework Safety

The Firework Code

* Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or EN 14035.

* Do not drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.

* Keep fireworks in a closed box.

* Follow the instructions on each firework.

* Light at arm's length, using a taper.

* Stand well back.

* Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it has not gone off, it could still explode.

* Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.

* Always supervise children around fireworks.

* Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.

* Never give sparklers to a child under five.

* Keep pets indoors.

Planning your display area

It is important you consider carefully where you will set your fireworks up and what surrounds them. Fireworks have 2 different safety distances, 5 metres (Category 2) and 25 metres (Category 3).

You should ensure that a minimum of those distances is available from the firing point to the nearest member of audience.

Where possible place fireworks behind a wall, bricks, or barrier.  Thus there is a physical obstruction between the fireworks the the audience.

For larger displays we recommend reading HSG124 - the official HSE guide on planning a firework display.
